My personal experience accords with the accumulated data from other users reported above, so my conclusions don't change. In their base configurations, these are excellent portable computers for the occasional video project up to 4K footage.

But these laptops become ridiculously expensive when configured as daily production machines. A desktop PC is a much better solution.

You can also consider a Schenker/XMG laptop built for video work. These have dual internal drives and provide much better value than Apple. You will not get the long battery life or whisper quiet operation. robinhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08743788064455642852noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14307486.post-36336428962436227812022-02-07T21:45:52.674+00:002022-02-07T21:45:52.674+00:00So far I have been summarising the experience of o...So far I have been summarising the experience of other users, most of whom bought a very expensive, fully-configured MacBook M1 Max. My department will soon be getting a mid-line MacBook 14" M1 Pro, a configuration similar to what most of us can afford. I will be updating my results once I have this in hand.

The other data point I can address is the video card, since I've learned more about this recently. For sheer speed and gaming performance it is true that Nvidia cards are the best performers. The RTX 3090 has a massive 24 GB VRAM for high resolution timelines.

HOWEVER, Resolve is much better at using the memory of an AMD GPU. As documented above, my RTX 3060 Ti 8GB was unable to process UHD footage, but worked well with 4K. AMD cards with an identical amount of VRAM can handle higher resolution footage without error. There is some issue here between the architectures that Blackmagic have not solved.

In short, Apple systems and AMD GPUs avoid the dreaded "memory full" errors that can plagued Nvidia cards. It's worth taking a 20% performance hit to avoid this error, since then performance is reduced to zero!

An RTX 3090 is €2800, but the AMD RX 6800 XT (16 GB) is only €1400. The AMD RX 6700 XT (12 GB) is €970. These prices might make the option of upgrading a desktop system look more attractive. robinhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08743788064455642852noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14307486.post-378572439969663182022-02-07T10:00:21.697+00:002022-02-07T10:00:21.697+00:00Sorry for the long post.

It handles most of what I throw at it, with times I have to drop my timeline resolution to do things like effects and NR or wait for it to pre render, but I have my workarounds.

I mostly edit podcasts and youtube videos, however I do the odd event and wedding too, more and more music videos too these days come to think of it.

My desktop serves me well for my needs however I have an office away from home and a studio space for my personal youtube channel. The studio is an hour away from home and the office about half way so if I'm making a video it's a pain to have to drive 30 minutes to the office to edit the video, and if I find mistakes i'll have to drive back to re shoot.

For me the power of the M1 laptop seems great. It's portable, I can use it to edit from home or the studio (at least the basic edits and if I need to do heavy lifting I can go to the office. Will give me more time to be able to spend with the family as I can get home, put the kids to sleep then edit at home in the evening.

The thing I can’t imagine is only working from a laptop. Do you guys think it would be worth buying the 16gb MacBook or look at getting the m1pro/max.

P1ayerwunhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05718285556328315346noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14307486.post-81318515795581218842022-01-11T15:00:26.096+00:002022-01-11T15:00:26.096+00:00This article was significantly updated on 11 Janua...This article was significantly updated on 11 January 15:00 UDT.robinhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08743788064455642852noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14307486.post-82715552042020150332022-01-10T19:02:13.451+00:002022-01-10T19:02:13.451+00:00This comparison from Zebra Zone uses last-gen Wind...This comparison from Zebra Zone uses last-gen Windows hardware but is nonetheless interesting.
