Sorry it t...Aah... so it's all about DISTANCE!

Sorry it took my normally-not-so-thick head a while to understand that.

I thought it was about the focal length of the lens (hence I would often zoom out to 60-90mm to get the desired effect, and then have to step away to frame... I was still getting the results I wanted, but not for the reasons I thought).

A good portrait lens simply allows you to have suitable framing at flattering distances from your subject.

Thanks Robin.

Fred.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14307486.post-3820559965384304422010-09-04T18:38:51.467+01:002010-09-04T18:38:51.467+01:00Let me repeat, in bold, what I stated, also boldfa...Let me repeat, in bold, what I stated, also boldface, in the article: Perspective distortion is only influenced by how far you are from your subject. It has nothing directly to do with the lens or camera.

The DA*55 on an APS-C body has exactly the same field of view as an 85mm lens on 35mm film (or full frame sensor). This means you can stand the same distance away from your model with both kits and get exactly the same framing.

Thus the DA*55 is exactly equivalent to using a full-frame 85mm.robinhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08743788064455642852noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14307486.post-35182534060373262602010-09-04T18:08:52.325+01:002010-09-04T18:08:52.325+01:00Hi Robin,
Firstly, great blog, and thanks for all...Hi Robin,

Firstly, great blog, and thanks for all the effort you put in on the 28mm tests! Having just seen a 28/1.9 locally, I revisited most of the thread... that took a while!

Anyway, I'm a bit confused about this post...

One the one hand, you say a XXmm lens gives the same perspective distortion irrespective of sensor.

On the other hand, you commend Pentax for making the new(ish) 55, mimicking the old 85 focal length.

While it may have the same apparent focal length, it doesn't have the same flattering perspective characteristics, so what's the point?

I use my FA 50/1.4 as my main portrait lens, primarily as it enables me to get subject separation (I have nothing else below F2.8). Should I be looking at a 100mm macro or a 50-135 for example?

All the Best,

Fred.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14307486.post-47989453981497733912010-07-07T17:55:55.133+01:002010-07-07T17:55:55.133+01:00I include as a footnote this list of other M42 and...I include as a footnote this list of other M42 and PK mount lenses in the same focal length as the Pentax DA*55mm f/1.4. Deserving first mention is the classic Takumar 55mm f/1.8, in all of its variants. Tomioka builds a 55mm f/1.2 lens under such names as Tominon, Yashinon, Cosinon, Revuenon, Chinon, Rikenon, Porst Color Reflex and Vivitar Series I. And I should also mention the Voigtlander Nokton 58mm f/1.4, which is available now in the SL II version. All of this are born again in APS-C as excellent portrait lenses.robinhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08743788064455642852noreply@blogger.com
